Rui Vieira was born on the island of Faial, in the Azores, where the City Council of Horta awarded him the Municipal Merit Medal.

He studied Communication Design in Fine Arts, University of Lisbon, and went on to work as a creative director in agencies such as Fullsix (Lisbon and New York), AKQA (Amsterdam), and O Escritório (Lisbon), leading campaigns for brands including Nike, Samsung, LG, Microsoft, Tommy Hilfiger, Mini, and EA Sports.

Alongside his work in advertising, Rui produced the OFFF Festival in Portugal in 2008 and 2009.

In 2014, he left the agency world to focus fully on film direction and photography. Since then, he has directed and photographed campaigns for brands like IKEA, The Walt Disney Company, Vodafone, Lidl, NOS, EDP, FPF, Altice, Super Bock, Sagres, among others.

With a multidisciplinary background, Rui also collaborated with the band Orelha Negra, creating their album artwork, stage design, and live visuals for the tour. He also designed the stage and visuals for artist Fred’s live concert.

In the cultural sector, Rui has worked closely with Motelx – Lisbon International Horror Film Festival – developing branding, concept, and promotional films in 2019, 2020, and 2024. In 2024, he served as a jury member for the Méliès d’Argent – Best European Feature Film. He also created the concept and directed the official film for Évora’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2027.

He lives between Amsterdam and Lisbon, though most of his work is based in Portugal, where he was awarded Director of the Year (2018) and Photographer of the Year (2020) by the Clube da Criatividade de Portugal.

Rui is currently developing his first feature film, No Sangue.

He is a partner, director, and creative producer at the Lisbon-based production company Playground.
